Dear Parents: The mind of a child typically develops more quickly between ages 3 and 6 than at any other time during it's life. This was the discovery of Dr. Maria Montessori, the first woman to graduate from the University of Rome School of Medicine. She made children and the way they grow mentally, physically and emotionally, her life’s work. Doctor Montessori’s findings and the learning tools she developed attracted worldwide interest. Today’s enlightened parents are aware of the need and advantages of an early start for their children's education and the wisdom of choosing a Montessori program for that important beginning. The Montessori Center for Early Learning, Inc., headed by Patricia Duncan (mother of six), is licensed by the State of Connecticut and recognized by the American Montessori Society. The Montessori Center’s license is limited to 27 children. Its exciting curriculum for the developing mind and the curious child offers an educational head start for children 3 to 6 years olds. At the Montessori Center every child is exposed to daily opportunities for growth in many areas. This is achieved in a safe environment of tender loving care. Uniquely designed classroom materials are displayed so as to be an invitation for every child to observe and explore. Through the natural processes of exploration and observation their skills begin to develop. It is common to see a three year old working at tasks, which lead to writing, reading and mathematics. It is also common for a five year old to come to the aid of a younger child or for several children to decide to work together on a project. Social skills develop rapidly now as the children learn to share and help one another. Curiosity is the director of a child’s, not an adult’s preconceived goal. Children work in an environment designed and created specifically to arouse their curiosity. Classroom materials are at their level and convenient, so each child can progress at his or her own pace. At times a child will speed ahead in a frenzy of learning. At other times the same child may wish to slow down and be more thoughtfully detailed. Individual attention is one on one; a “Montessori Hallmark”. The Montessori classroom and its atmosphere are created by the professional staff so they easily support a variety of learning speeds. The Montessori Center is located in the Education Building of the Trumbull Congregational Church at 3115 Reservoir Avenue (in Trumbull Center) within easy reach of Routes 8, 15, 25 & I-95. Affiliation with the church is that of landlord and tenant only. The classrooms are well equipped and cheerful. A fenced in play area is adjacent to the school building. The Montessori Center operates a separate summer program from July through late August. The curriculum is such that a child may begin at any time. Children are welcome to the program for a period as short as one week. Enrollment for all Montessori Center programs is year round. To receive printed information or schedule a visit to our classrooms, telephone (203) 372-2358.
